Pre-Production has begun on Rising Star, a movie that will be filming in Connecticut late this summer.  Production meetings are going well and location scouting is becoming much more aggressive.  This is going to be a very small budget feature that will take place entirely in the city of Hartford and we’re very excited about it. For the last few years I have been working on a script with Brian Trent and Marty Lang.  It’s based on the work of H.P. Lovecraft, specifically the stories Haunter of the Dark, Call of Cthulhu and Shadow over Innsmouth.  We’re making a final pass over the script now and hope to be finished with it soon.  It’s currently in its fifth draft and has come a long way. Browncoats: Redemption

Any time a Joss Whedon offering comes to an end, I always feel a little sad.  So it’s with great pleasure that I point to http://browncoatsmovie.com/ today.  Firefly has probably endured as my favorite work from Joss and if nothing else, I’ve never seen anything of his that he so obviously loved every frame of.

It was something he was really passionate about and it certainly showed.  It was a crying shame that Fox butchered that experience and it’s a testament that he was able to take 11 aired (14 filmed) episodes of a television show that was presented out of order, and convince someone he could make a profitable movie out of it. Prioritization, Organization… probably a few other ‘tion’ words.

Now that I’ve had ten days to ponder my new found enthusiasm (play more video games) and plan out exactly how I’m going to get back on track (procrastinate profusely), I thought I’d lay it all out here (finally get off my lazy ass) as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (The hammer is my penis.) graces my television. Trying Times…

With the economy doing its best Joaquin Pheonix impersonation, things are difficult for pretty much everyone these days.  There are no exceptions for those of us trying to do something creative with our lives and often times the pressing issues of poverty, debt and living in our mom’s basement can get in the way of creative output.

Such is the case with me and this site.  It has been stagnant for months as idea after idea has faded away under the growing pressure of paying bills with a job that had less and less hours to offer (which eventually became unemployment), trying to finish a degree and trying to get back into some kind of physical shape that isn’t round.  That being said, I can officially state that I’ve hit absolute rock bottom.

I have no money, no job, am in awful shape physically and creatively and have done pretty much nothing but attend class and play video games for several months now.  I do a good job of making it look like I’m keeping busy, but really I’ve been hiding from the world for a while… and I’m done with that.

This website is not functioning as it was intended to.  And that’s entirely my fault, so I’m going to use it for something a little different from now on.  It’s going to serve as a chronicle of how I dig myself out of this hole and make something of my life despite the economy swirling around the drain and me having absolutely no momentum with anything creative at this moment.

So, to start… here’s where I am today.  I’m overweight… no, scratch that.  I’m fat.  I live in my parents basement, at thirty years old.  I have yet to earn my college degree, despite being in school off and on since 1997.  My checking account was overdrawn this morning for the first time since I was twenty two years old and if it was not for the mother who lets me live in her basement, it would still be that way.  I have no job, and am fighting the state to get unemployment benifits.  And to top it all off I haven’t finished anything I’ve started writing in almost a year now.  Scripts, novels, short stories, poems… nothing.  Everything I’ve tried to do has been a microcosm of my life.  Lots of promise, plenty of good intentions, no follow through.

Now, I could just give up, finish my degree and go to work doing something I hate for the rest of my life.  I could keep living off my parent’s generosity while holding on to the dream that I’ll someday make it as a writer.  But both are easy ways out.  Both let me continue making excuses.  And, as I said above… I’m done with that.

I don’t know how I’ll do it, I don’t know how long it will take.  But the journey will be laid out here every step of the way.  Some of that will include creative content for the site… because if it doesn’t, I’m just failing to follow through again.  And I’m d… is that getting repetative?

Anyway, today is day one.  March 12th, 2009.  The last day I let myself hide from everything that’s troubling me.  The last day I make excuses for my position in life.

Gary Oldman recently directed a music video that was shot with cell phone cams and the process was captured by Buffy alumn, Juliet Landau in what was her directorial debut. This ends up being a great example of how “new media” can be utilized on multiple levels.

And come back soon for another White Powder Gold update. Chapter 3 should be up in a few days.

Over the last couple of years the state of Connecticut has been trying to build itself up to be a friendly place for film makers. It started with some very enticing tax incentive programs and expanded to some private training programs, finally coming around to state sponsored training. Recently, one such program came to it’s completion, producing a short film called Gamers. Read more
