Gary Oldman recently directed a music video that was shot with cell phone cams and the process was captured by Buffy alumn, Juliet Landau in what was her directorial debut. This ends up being a great example of how “new media” can be utilized on multiple levels.

Over the last couple of years the state of Connecticut has been trying to build itself up to be a friendly place for film makers. It started with some very enticing tax incentive programs and expanded to some private training programs, finally coming around to state sponsored training. So over the weekend a trailer for the upcoming movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine was leaked from Comic-Con and spread across the net like wildfire. It was a shakey cell phone video from a long ways back, but it was a full trailer and it was spectacular. Unfortunately, it’s also gone now. Read more

Peter Coyote wrote an open letter to the top tier of acting talent in SAG, bringing up an important issue with the common actor… the one who doesn’t earn enough in a year to retire on. He sent the letter to deadlinehollywooddaily.com hoping it would resonate with some of them as they have the power to prevent a strike if they simply do something to protect the members of their union who fill in the worlds around them in the movies they make. Machinima: Zinwrath (recommendation)

So we’re coming out of the weekend looking to introduce something a little different in today’s update. It’s a machinima called Zinwrath. Now, some of you might need a quick explanation here. Machinima is the use of non-professional 3D engines to produce CGI animations and tell stories. This is usually done with video games. Here’s an example page from a comic book that was designed using The Matrix Online. Zinwrath was done using World of Warcraft. And it’s pretty darned funny. Read more
