Remembering Hypatia (recommendation)

Today we’re focusing on an independently published novel from Connecticut writer, Brian Trent. Yes, Brian is a friend of ours, but no, that doesn’t have anything to do with why we’re recommending this book. We’re recommending it because it’s a wonderful piece of historical fiction about one of the greatest figures in history… that you’ve never heard of.
Hypatia of Alexandria was not only one of the greatest female philosophers in history, she’s simply one of the greatest philosophers. And a great shining beacon of a reason why qualifying statements like that with gender is an appaulingly archaic practice. She was every bit the equal of her contemporaries and deserves to be explored for her work, not whether she picked up a y chromosome on her way to the birth canal.
The book is historical fiction, but the main historical points are not altered for the sake of the story. It’s a wonderful book that deserves to be read as it tackles the idea of censorship, which is quite prevalent today. The author recently blogged about this, which you can find here.
You can find the website for the book at http://www.rememberinghypatia.com/ and can buy the book at amazon.com. If you live in or near Connecticut, you can also find it at some of your local book stores.
If you like to read and enjoy either history or fiction, do yourself a favor and give this book a chance.
